Nathan Hayden Heidelberg was a 28-year-old police officer with the Midland Police Department who died after being shot on March 5, 2019, in Midland, Texas. He was responding to a burglary alarm at a residence around 1:30 a.m. when the homeowner, David Wilson, fired the fatal shot. Heidelberg later died at Midland Memorial Hospital.
David Wilson, described as an oil company executive, said he shot Heidelberg believing an intruder was trying to force his way into the family home. Wilson was arrested and initially charged with manslaughter; a grand jury later returned a murder indictment. The trial attracted major local attention, included disputes over communications, and involved defenses invoking Texas’s stand-your-ground law and the castle doctrine.
Jury selection became a public-health issue when it produced a COVID-19 superspreader event that infected prospective jurors and the judge. Both Wilson and Heidelberg’s family have filed suits against the alarm manufacturer and installer alleging negligent alarm communications. The road by Midland police headquarters has been renamed Nathan Heidelberg Memorial Highway.
