Bertha Louise Burke, 29, was last seen at her home on East 13th Street in Port Angeles, Washington, on February 20, 1970. A mother of three children all under six, she reportedly tucked them into bed that night and disappeared by morning, leaving behind her purse and personal belongings. She sometimes used her middle name, Louise.
At the time she was separated and seeking a divorce from Douglas Burke on grounds of cruelty; the divorce was not finalized until months after she vanished. Reports say she was seeing another man when she went missing and that her estranged husband became a person of interest. The case was later classified as a homicide, though no trace of Bertha has ever been found.
Investigators reopened the inquiry in 2003 with the FBI, using ground-penetrating radar and cadaver dogs to search the driveway of her former home and a parking lot behind her husband’s former workplace. An anomaly appeared beneath a concrete slab, but excavation produced no evidence. No further searches have been planned. Does anyone who knew Bertha or her family have information that could help bring answers?
