Thomas Hardin, 48, of Elgin, Texas, was shot and killed on September 14, 2018 after a dispute with a neighbor that escalated into gunfire. The shooting happened around 10:30 p.m. on Waynespur Lane in the Elm Creek neighborhood just west of Elgin. Both men fired multiple rounds; bullets struck Hardin’s home and the neighbor’s residence across the street, and Hardin was struck multiple times.
The Travis County Sheriff’s Office investigated the incident as a homicide. The neighbor said he went to Hardin’s home to introduce himself and that the argument began over the neighbor’s job. Investigators concluded Hardin allegedly showed his weapon and fired first; the neighbor claimed self-defense and was not charged after a grand jury declined to indict, finding the shooting justified.
Neighbors expressed alarm about stray bullets endangering other families. Did anyone in Elm Creek see or hear anything that night that might shed more light on what happened?
