Davonta Jason Combs, 26, of Wichita Falls, Texas, was fatally shot outside Studio E nightclub on August 26, 2018. The shooting happened about 3:24 a.m. during an exchange of gunfire; Combs was exiting the club when he was struck and was later pronounced dead at United Regional Health Care Systems’ emergency department. Two other people also suffered gunshot wounds in the same incident.

Witnesses reported seeing a black male with a long gun firing toward the club entrance. That individual, identified in reports as Trayvon Martease Strawn, admitted to retrieving an AR-15 from his vehicle and firing multiple rounds toward the entrance; part of the episode was recorded on cell phone video and used in the investigation. A relative of Combs, Demetrion Daishion Combs, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon but was later acquitted by a grand jury.

Strawn was arrested and initially charged with one count of first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated assault; he later pleaded guilty to manslaughter and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and received concurrent sentences.
