Sam Lavel Wingate, an 84-year-old Korean War veteran from Baytown, Texas, was shot on the morning of August 15, 2018 while walking with a friend along the 9600 block of Pinehurst Drive near Highway 146. A light-colored, four-door sedan pulled up beside them and a person in the vehicle fired, striking Wingate in the back. He was taken to hospital and died four days later on August 19, 2018.

Baytown police released surveillance video of the vehicle, which had a missing front license plate, and believe the same car was linked to similar shootings in the Houston Heights area. The department and Baytown Crime Stoppers increased the reward to $25,000 and continue to seek tips. Wingate had recently undergone bypass surgery and was widowed; his family has publicly urged anyone with information to come forward.
