Marcus De’Shaun Lil’ Ike Mitchell, Sr., a 37-year-old man from Beaumont, Texas, was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds on a stairwell at the Cypress Bend Apartments on North Major Drive and pronounced dead at the scene on June 7, 2018. The case report identifies two suspects, Kendrick Malbrough and Jaquavian Mayberry. Malbrough was named a person of interest and was found hiding under a residence after a brief chase; both Malbrough and Mayberry were taken into custody and transported to the Jefferson County Jail. Mayberry faced charges for failure to identify as a fugitive and possession of a controlled substance.

In September 2020 the U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force took Jaquavian Mayberry into custody in connection with Mitchell’s murder. Detectives have continued seeking additional information and potential charges against others believed to be involved.
