Michael Campbell, 47, of Karnack, Texas, died after an officer-involved shooting on the evening of April 8, 2018. Deputies responded to a 911 report of a white male attempting to break into a home in the 2500 block of Pine Island Road; yelling was heard on the call. Deputies found Campbell on the front porch armed with a gun and say he pointed the weapon at them. Deputies fired; Campbell received medical aid at the scene and was taken to a hospital, where he later died. The Texas Department of Public Safety Ranger Division was called to investigate the shooting.
Investigators determined Campbell had broken into the home and was armed. An Arkansas man named Michael Clevenger, 51, of Little Rock, was later implicated, charged with aggravated assault in connection with the same incident and pleaded guilty to Campbell’s murder, receiving a 40-year Texas sentence. The case raised questions about use of force and prompted a thorough review of the events.
If anyone witnessed the events on Pine Island Road that night or has additional information about Campbell or Clevenger’s actions before deputies arrived, please share what is known.
