Elania Johnson, a 44-year-old African American woman from Carthage, Texas, was fatally shot on February 21, 2018 on Private Road 622 off Panola County Road 222. The suspect was identified as Jeffrey Mickens, 47, who was known to be Johnson’s boyfriend at the time.
After the shooting, Mickens was involved in an armed standoff with law enforcement in Holland’s Quarters and was arrested. He was charged with murder, attempted capital murder of a peace officer, and two counts of aggravated kidnapping. Mickens later pleaded guilty and was sentenced by 123rd District Judge LeAnn Rafferty to concurrent 80-year terms on the murder-related charges, plus a 20-year term for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
The case drew attention locally as an instance of lethal domestic violence and the broader need for support for victims. Did anyone in the Carthage area have contact with Elania or know more about her life before February 21, 2018?
