Joel Robert Cunha, 39, was fatally shot on January 15, 2018, outside a home near Weber and Gollihar streets in Corpus Christi, Texas. Joel was a father to daughter Jada Pearl Cunha and son Odin Alexander Cunha, and was survived by his mother, Maria Cunha, and siblings.

Prosecutors say the shooting followed a confrontation after Aldo Naranjo had been hitting on Joel’s then 14-year-old daughter; Naranjo opened fire and Joel died at the scene. Naranjo was arrested and charged in the case; at trial he argued he acted in self-defense but the jury convicted him of manslaughter and he was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
