On December 21, 2017, six-year-old Kameron Prescott of Schertz, Texas, was killed when a bullet fired by Bexar County sheriff’s deputies during a pursuit penetrated the wall of his family’s mobile home and struck him in the abdomen. Deputies had been pursuing Amanda Jones, wanted on car theft and fraud charges; they fired multiple rounds at Jones after believing she was armed, though no gun was recovered at the scene. Investigators later found a dark tube with Jones’ blood on it that deputies may have mistaken for a firearm. Kameron was taken to the hospital but died of his injuries.
Kameron’s family sued Bexar County, Sheriff Javier Salazar, and the deputies, alleging inadequate training and deliberate indifference in use-of-force policies; the family reached a $4.5 million settlement in late 2019, and Amanda Jones’ mother received $500,000. A grand jury declined to bring criminal charges against the deputies. Kameron was remembered by family, friends, and teachers as a kind-hearted child; his funeral drew hundreds. Does anyone have information about community response or witness accounts from the Pecan Grove Mobile Home Park that could shed more light on that day?
