Tony Sanders, 51, of New Boston, Texas, died on December 3, 2017, after a single gunshot to his upper right leg that caused rapid blood loss. The shooting took place at his home on Jones Street in Texarkana following a dispute at a football-watching party Sanders hosted. Sanders had earlier asked guest Takyme James to leave for drunken, belligerent behavior; a physical altercation left James with a bloody face and black eye.
After leaving, James returned with cousins Clarence Willis and LaPrense Willis. Sanders’ wife was hiding in a bedroom and called 911; police tried to stop the bleeding but Sanders died that night at a local hospital.
All three men were charged under the law of parties. Takyme James was convicted and sentenced to life in prison in December 2018; Clarence Willis was found guilty and sentenced to 99 years in November 2019; LaPrense Willis was later convicted and received a 70-year sentence in April 2023. Anyone who knew Sanders or witnessed the events at the party is asked to come forward with information.
