Emily Rain Garcia was 7 years old when she was killed on November 5, 2017, during the mass shooting at the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs. She was attending services with her mother, Joann Ward, and her siblings. Joann Ward shielded Emily from the gunfire; both mother and daughter later died of their injuries.
The shooter, Devin Patrick Kelley, killed 26 people that day, including children and adults, then fled and was later found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Kelley had a prior domestic violence conviction from a U.S. Air Force court-martial that was not entered into the federal database, a failure that allowed him to purchase firearms. Victims families, including Emily’s, have pursued legal action against the Air Force over that reporting failure.
Emily’s death is part of one of the deadliest mass shootings in Texas history. If anyone knew Emily or has information about her life or the day at the church, please share what you can to help remember her.
