Sara Louise Johns Johnson, 68, was killed on November 5, 2017, during the mass shooting at Sutherland Springs First Baptist Church that left 26 dead and 20 injured. She was attending Sunday service with her husband Dennis Neil Johnson Sr. and was an active member of the Sutherland First Baptist Church congregation, as well as a mother and grandmother.
The shooter, Devin Kelley, a former U.S. Air Force serviceman, had been court-martialed for assaulting his wife and stepson. Investigators found the Air Force did not report Kelley’s criminal history to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, which prosecutors and victims’ families say enabled him to buy the firearms later used in the attack. Kelley fled the scene and was later found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Families of the victims, including Sara’s, pursued lawsuits against the Air Force and Department of Defense over the reporting failure. The community continues to mourn those lost and remember the victims for their roles in family and church life. Does anyone who knew Sara or her family have memories to share or information that might help preserve her story?
