Robert Lee Castaneda, 31, was shot and killed on October 16, 2017, in San Marcos, Texas. He was found facedown and unresponsive in the 2000 block of Hunter Road, near the Twin Lakes Villas apartments, having suffered multiple gunshot wounds to an arm and his torso and was pronounced dead at the scene. The San Marcos Police Department opened an investigation; Castaneda’s death was the city’s fourth homicide that year and investigators sought witnesses and suspects after no immediate arrests.

Police later identified Jesus Villarreal Jr., who had lived with Castaneda, as the primary suspect. An arrest affidavit alleges Villarreal shot Castaneda during an altercation, then took Castaneda’s camo backpack, marijuana and $3,000 and fled. Villarreal was located and arrested by U.S. Marshals in Stephenville on September 28, 2018, and charged with murder and tampering with evidence, then booked into the Erath County Jail pending extradition to Hays County.

Anyone who knew Castaneda, lived at Twin Lakes Villas in 2017, or has information about what happened that night is asked to come forward with tips.
