Gabriel Bernal, 33, was killed on May 30, 2017, in a six-second shootout at a Greenville, Texas car dealership. Bernal and 54-year-old private investigator Fidel Garcia, both from Corpus Christi, had been waiting nearly four hours for Ramon Michael Hutchinson, a fugitive wanted in Minnesota. Cellphone video and released 911 calls captured Bernal and Garcia approaching Hutchinson with guns drawn and the immediate volley of roughly 20 shots that left all three men with multiple gunshot wounds; all three died at the scene.
Bernal and Garcia had tracked Hutchinson with a device placed on his car and intended to apprehend him when he arrived with his girlfriend to trade in a vehicle. Witness accounts and the dealership owner say the two identified themselves as federal agents to staff, a detail that may have added to confusion during the confrontation. Hutchinson was wanted on a Minneapolis failure-to-appear warrant on a first-degree drug charge and was described in the report as one of the most dangerous fugitives in the U.S.
The shooting ended three lives and left their families grieving. Does anyone have additional information about Bernal’s work as a private investigator or the events at the dealership that day?
