Late on March 25, 2017, a shooting on the 600 block of Martinez Street in Progreso, Texas, left two men dead. Deputies arrived about 3:54 a.m. after reports of shots fired. Jose De Jesus Cano, 49, was shot and later died at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco; 23-year-old Juan Gerardo Casares was found dead on the street with multiple gunshot wounds. A third man, 28-year-old Nelson Salazar, was treated for a non-life-threatening leg wound.
Investigators say a white passenger car with three males arrived at the residence, left, then returned with a fourth male. A physical altercation escalated to gunfire — 21 shots were fired. Four Progreso men were arrested and charged with murder: Eduardo Alejandro Cano, Fernando Juan Casares, Eduardo Casares, and Jordan Jovvany Garces. The suspects asserted self-defense; authorities say the evidence supported charging them.
What details about that night or the people involved might help explain how the confrontation began?
