On March 25, 2017, 23-year-old Juan Gerardo Casares of Progreso, Texas, was killed in an early-morning shooting on the 600 block of Martinez Street. Deputies with the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office arrived after a report of shots fired and found Casares lying in the street with multiple gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooting left a second man, 49-year-old Jose De Jesus Cano, fatally wounded; a third victim, 28-year-old Nelson Salazar, suffered a non-life-threatening leg wound. Investigators say a total of 21 shots were fired and that the attack began with a physical confrontation after four suspects arrived in a white passenger car. Eduardo Alejandro Cano, Fernando Juan Casares, Eduardo Casares, and Jordan Jovvany Garces were arrested and charged with murder and held on bond; authorities reported witness statements and scene evidence as the basis for the arrests. The motive and full details of the feud that allegedly led to the violence have not been disclosed.
Did anyone in Progreso or the Martinez Street area witness the confrontation or have information about the feud between the groups involved?
