Kurt Dustin Dusty Childress, 39, of Abilene, Texas, was shot and killed on March 4, 2017 on County Road 341 just east of the Abilene Environmental Landfill. He was known locally for his devotion to family, a love of motorcycles and music, and had spent the year before his death building a motorcycle with loved ones. Dusty was married to Jennifer Quick and was the father of Maci Anne Childress.

Wesley Dale Mason, a man described as having ties to the Bandidos motorcycle gang, shot Childress following a dispute between the two. Witnesses reported a grey-colored truck leaving the scene; Mason fled but was later apprehended. A jury later found Mason guilty of murder and sentenced him to life in prison with a $10,000 fine.
