Ruben Trinidad, a 17-year-old senior from Garland, Texas, was shot and killed on January 5, 2017, outside a Chili’s restaurant in Garland. The shooting occurred about 3:30 p.m. after Ruben walked outside alone and got into a vehicle with a 15-year-old juvenile in the parking lot. Investigators say the encounter was related to a narcotics transaction and that the 15-year-old shot Ruben once in the upper body. Ruben was found injured in the parking lot, taken to a hospital, and died of his wounds.

The 15-year-old suspect was later arrested and charged with murder after family members turned him in and handed over what detectives believe to be the murder weapon. The case deeply affected Ruben’s classmates at Rowlett High School; counselors were made available, the school observed a moment of silence, and students wore red, Ruben’s favorite color, in tribute. It remains unclear whether prosecutors will seek to try the teenage suspect as an adult.

If anyone witnessed the shooting outside the Chili’s or has information about the narcotics-related encounter, please share what is known.
