Thomas Alexander Niblo, a 54-year-old real estate developer and rancher from Abilene, Texas, was shot and killed in his home on December 12, 2016. He was found in his bed with multiple gunshot wounds; his wife Cheryl was in the bathroom, locked the door and fled the house to call for help and was unharmed.
Investigators later arrested Niblo’s brother-in-law, Luke Matthew Sweetser, in September 2020 and charged him with the murder. Prosecutors said the motive appeared connected to family business disputes over their late father’s estate; testimony at trial described a history of conflicts and the recovery of firearms Sweetser had taken.
The case drew intense local attention as it played out in court and raised questions about how disputes over family assets can escalate to lethal violence. Did anyone in the community have contact with Thomas or the family around December 2016 that could shed more light on the feud?
