Darrell Trey Almond was 32 when he died on July 6, 2016, in Alice, Texas. A Corpus Christi native, he was born December 11, 1982, and was a resident of Alice at the time of his death. He served in the United States Marine Corps and is survived by his parents, Patricia and Robert Gibson.

The Alice Police Department investigated the death as a homicide. On December 13, 2023, Matthew Garcia and his juvenile brother were arrested in connection with the incident; the Jim Wells County Sheriff’s Office assisted with arrests made on Farm-to-Market 155 and County Road. Reporting notes that the investigation and subsequent legal actions prompted multiple litigations and further inquiries.
