Zane Lopez, a 16-year-old Hispanic male from San Angelo, Texas, was shot in the head on March 26, 2016, and died of his injuries five days later. He was found in the backyard of his home alongside 18-year-old Juan Julio Guerrero, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities tied the shooting to threatening social media and text exchanges between Lopez and members of a criminal street gang. Within a week of the shooting, six people were arrested and charged with capital murder.
The case raises questions about how online threats intersect with real-world gang retaliations and how juvenile involvement is handled when violent crimes follow social media exchanges. Did anyone in San Angelo see or hear about the exchanges before March 26, 2016?
