Douglas Hearne, 48, of Wichita Falls died on March 12, 2016, after being shot during an altercation at The Haystack bar. The disturbance began between two people inside the bar; a bouncer escorted one person out and, shortly afterward, multiple shots were fired outside. Hearne was inside trying to keep the door closed to keep the shooter out when he was struck once in the lower right chest and once in the right leg.
Wichita Falls police took 30-year-old Ashlie Marie Couch into custody soon after the shooting. Couch said she picked up a semi-automatic handgun and fired into the carpet inside the bar in retaliation for her cousin being shot outside, but evidence collected at the scene did not support that account. Couch was initially charged with murder and later pleaded guilty to manslaughter as part of a plea agreement; she was sentenced to 20 years and received credit for time served since the day of the shooting. The defense received a state-appointed investigator and a court-appointed attorney during proceedings.
What did regular patrons or staff at The Haystack notice that night that might clarify how the shooting unfolded?
