Thomas Gene Smethers, 24, of Copperas Cove, Texas, was fatally shot on October 28, 2015, in the Walmart parking lot in Copperas Cove around 3:30 a.m. Police say Smethers met with two men, Terence Len Daniel Junior and Tadarius Lavonte Davis, both from Killeen, for what investigators believe was a drug deal; Smethers was shot multiple times and later died at a local hospital.

Davis was arrested October 29, 2015, and charged with murder. Daniel turned himself in later that day and was also charged with murder. Both were held in custody. The investigation involved the Copperas Cove and Killeen police departments, the Texas Rangers, and Coryell County officers.
