Robert Mata, 53, of Ben Bolt, Texas, was found dead near County Road 464 on October 20, 2015. His death was one of two in the same incident; the other victim was 50-year-old Marcelino Guerra. The Jim Wells County Sheriff’s Department began investigating after a 911 call the next day about a vehicle on fire on County Road 148, and the burned vehicle belonged to one of the victims.
Two months later authorities arrested two teenagers, Michael Castro and Andres Garza, on suspicion of multiple charges including capital murder in connection with the killings. Investigators tied the suspects and a fourth accomplice, Aaron Garza, to an attempted robbery of Mata and Guerra and to a separate incident the next day in which a Sutherland’s store was robbed, a store representative was threatened with a firearm, and a vehicle was set on fire.
Did anyone in the Ben Bolt or Jim Wells County area know Mata or Guerra, or have information about the events around County Roads 464 and 148?
