Derek Zagone, 32, of Beaumont was fatally shot once in the chest on September 7, 2015, during a confrontation at Baypointe Manor Apartments in Texas City. The encounter began about 2 p.m. when Bryan Winslow Phillips, 30, accused Zagone of stealing his gun. Both men drew firearms and Phillips shot Zagone. Zagone was taken to a hospital and died of his wounds.
Phillips fled but then carried out several violent crimes that same day, including robbing an emergency room, stealing a Lexus at gunpoint, taking hostages in a Walgreens pharmacy, and ultimately shooting himself during a standoff with police. Texas City detectives examined whether Phillips acted in self-defense during the initial confrontation. No charges were filed in Zagone’s death because Phillips died before any legal proceedings.
Zagone was remembered as an avid animal lover who enjoyed time with family. If anyone knew Derek or witnessed the events at Baypointe Manor on September 7, 2015, any information could still be important.
