Samantha Elizabeth Dean, 29, was found shot to death in her car on February 4, 2015, in Bastrop, Texas. She was seven months pregnant and worked as a Victim Services coordinator for the Kyle Police Department. The scene was staged to look like a drug deal gone wrong, but investigators found evidence of a planned murder.

Samantha had been in a tumultuous relationship with former Austin Police Department officer VonTrey Clark, who reportedly pressured her to have an abortion; she refused. Entries in Samantha’s journal expressed fear for her life and referenced threats by Clark. Prosecutors say Clark offered money to have Samantha and her unborn child killed. Clark, Kevin Leo Watson and Freddie Lee Smith allegedly arranged the murder: Clark lured Samantha to Bastrop, Smith shot her twice in the head and Clark fired an additional shot, while Watson helped plan and provided transportation.
