Alan Lance Alverson, a 45-year-old man from Sunset, Texas, died on January 28, 2015, after a shoot-out with law enforcement following a pursuit. Officers had attempted to stop him on outstanding felony warrants; Alverson allegedly failed to stop, led them on a chase, and at one point pointed a pistol at an officers’ vehicle. He later ran into the woods, where officers and Wise County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Pepper tracked him down.
According to reports, Alverson began shooting at officers when located, and Pepper was killed in the exchange. Officers returned fire and Alverson was shot and killed. The Texas Rangers were called in to investigate the circumstances leading up to the shoot-out and the officers’ response.
The incident drew attention because a K-9 was killed and because of the pursuit and exchange of gunfire. Did anyone in the area witness the pursuit or have additional details about the tracking and confrontation in the woods?
