Illinois State Police agents presented the investigation to the St. Clair County State’s Attorney the next day and a first-degree murder charge was filed against Robert E. Hyde Jr., a Belleville man named as the accused shooter. No arrest happened immediately; the search continued for weeks until the United States Marshals Service took Hyde into custody in Caseyville on July 29, 2024, and he was held at the St. Clair County Jail.
