Michael Berry, 50, of Sweetwater, Texas, died on June 26, 2014, after a prolonged standoff with police. Authorities say the confrontation began when Berry allegedly stole a front-end loader from L.R. Sells and Sons Scrap Iron and later a bulldozer from another business; surveillance footage reportedly identified him as the suspect. Officers found Berry barricaded in his trailer and say he ignored demands to surrender and fired multiple rounds at them.

An Abilene SWAT team was called, tear gas was deployed into the trailer, and when Berry emerged waving a firearm the team returned fire. Berry was transported to Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead. A Nolan County grand jury later cleared the officers involved, concluding their use of force was justified; no charges were filed. Reports noted investigators believed Berry may have been mentally unstable, citing numerous bullets found in his trailer during a prior arrest.

If anyone knew Berry, witnessed the incidents on June 26, 2014, or has information about his behavior in the days before the standoff, please come forward.
