Stanley James Leger Sr., an 80-year-old Beaumont, Texas resident and longtime taxidermist, died on June 24, 2014, after being shot by Beaumont police officers. The incident began at a rental property on East Lucas Drive where Leger was confronting tenants he accused of destroying his property. He reportedly fired a rifle shot into the air to scare them, then pointed the rifle at officers who responded. Officers fired, wounding Leger; he later died during surgery at Christus Hospital-St Elizabeth.
His family later filed a wrongful death lawsuit naming the officers involved and city officials. Leger was married to Flora Leger and is survived by children Jim, Mark and Denise Mackan, nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and a sister, Gertrude Thibodeaux. A memorial service was held June 28, 2014, with a private burial in Louisiana.
What details about the confrontation or the officers’ actions are still unclear to readers who remember the case?
