Nineteen-year-old Dustin Donovan Smith died on October 27, 2013, after being shot in the back during an altercation at a Halloween party held at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall at the Fayette County Fairgrounds in La Grange, Texas. He was taken to St. Mark’s Medical Center and later succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities say 18-year-old JaKyle Harris, a Weimar High School football player, shot Smith with a shotgun. Harris was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Police reported he was the only person at the party known to have a gun; a .32 caliber pistol was recovered behind his home and was allegedly tampered with to destroy evidence. Two other people were arrested for allegedly bleaching the gun to hinder the investigation, and Harris was held on $750,000 bond. The La Grange Police Department indicated more arrests and charges could follow.
