Deputy Sheriff Joshua Shane Mitchell, 26, of the Reagan County Sheriff’s Office in Big Lake, Texas, was fatally shot on August 1, 2012, while responding to a call about a suicidal suspect. Officers encountered the suspect in the 1100 block of Main Street when the suspect opened fire, fatally wounding Mitchell. Mitchell was rushed to a hospital in San Angelo but died of his wounds.
The suspect, identified as Marcus Wade Madison, 42, barricaded himself in his residence and a 17-hour standoff followed. Madison shot himself in the face during the incident and died a week later. Madison had been arrested on a warrant for attempted capital murder and was charged in connection with Mitchell’s death; several firearms were recovered from his home. The Texas Rangers led the investigation.
Mitchell had served six years with the Reagan County Sheriff’s Office and worked as a D.A.R.E. Officer. He is survived by his wife Jill Matthews Mitchell, his parents, siblings, and grandparents. A benefit fund was established to support his family. Does anyone have memories of Mitchell or information about that day to share?
