Shane Thomas Detwiler, 31, was a Chambers County Deputy Sheriff and former Texas Game Warden who was killed in the line of duty on July 13, 2009, in Chambers, Texas. A decorated U.S. Army veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Bronze Star recipient, Detwiler was responding to a report that someone had opened fire on a utilities worker who was attempting to shut off water at a residence in the Tower Terrace mobile home community near Houston Raceway Park. The encounter escalated into a gun battle in which Detwiler was shot and killed.

The suspected shooter, 37-year-old Gilbert Ortez Jr., a former reserve police officer, was found dead inside the mobile home after a nine-hour standoff; authorities were uncertain whether Ortez died by suicide or was shot by police. Ortez’s common-law wife, Pamela Leggett-Ortez, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and resisting arrest. Bomb squad personnel also discovered potential explosive devices at the residence.

Detwiler is survived by his wife, Trish Detwiler, and their three children, Audie Michael, Aiden Glynn, and Abigail Paige Detwiler. He was buried at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Baytown with full law enforcement and military honors. Does anyone have additional information about the incident or knew Deputy Detwiler and his family?
