Corporal James Arvil Lamance, 53, of the Whitewright Police Department was shot and killed on December 23, 2000, while pursuing a suspected drunk driver in Fannin County, Texas. Lamance and his brother, a reserve officer with the same agency, had attempted to stop a vehicle; the driver led them into a field off County Road 4510, exited, and opened fire with a rifle, striking Corporal Lamance in the head. His brother returned fire but did not hit the suspect, who fled the scene and was arrested at his residence early the next morning.
The suspect was later charged with capital murder but was acquitted in April 2002, a result the family and colleagues described as a major disappointment. Lamance had served three years with Whitewright PD and was survived by his wife and two daughters. Community members still recall the case and the risks law enforcement faced that night.
If anyone remembers the events around County Road 4510 that night or has information about Corporal Lamance, please share what you know.
