Rosalyn Ann Robinson was an 18-year-old African American clerk who was killed on July 15, 1999, in Woodloch, Texas. A surveillance camera at the convenience store in Grangerland recorded the encounter when Larry Allen Hayes entered seeking a vehicle. He held a gun to Rosalyn’s head, ordered her into her car, and as a customer arrived and distracted him, Rosalyn attempted to flee. Hayes shot her as she tried to escape and then fatally shot her at point-blank range in the head; the killing was captured on the store’s videotape.
Hayes had earlier that day shot and killed his wife, 46-year-old Mary Evelyn Hayes, at their home in Woodloch. He was arrested and charged with capital murder for both deaths. Hayes waived appeals, was convicted of capital murder, and was executed by lethal injection in 2003; news coverage noted he was the first white person executed in Texas for killing a Black person.
Rosalyn’s death is recorded on surveillance video and remains a stark example of a murder witnessed by recording devices and by a customer who arrived during the crime. Does anyone have memories of the store, the area around Grangerland at that time, or other information about Rosalyn’s life that could add context to her story?
