On January 19, 1996, Senior Patrol Agent Jefferson L. Barr, 33, was fatally shot near Black Bridge in Eagle Pass, Texas. Around 10:30 p.m. Agent Barr and his partner, Border Patrol Agent Ned Thomas, had responded to electronic sensor activity on the Rio Grande and took positions on a trail leading away from the sensors to await possible foot traffic.

When the agents challenged four individuals carrying bundles of suspected narcotics, the subjects dropped their loads and three attempted to flee toward the river. Agent Thomas grappled with one of the three while the fourth subject fired all eight rounds from a .22 caliber revolver at Agent Barr, hitting him once in the left shoulder area. The wound was instantly fatal. Despite being wounded, Agent Barr returned fire, striking the shooter once in the left wrist and in the abdomen; the shooter crossed the river into Mexico, was later found suffering from his wounds and taken into custody by Mexican authorities. The incident led to the recovery of 201 pounds of marijuana at the scene. Agent Barr had served eight years with the United States Border Patrol and is survived by his wife, daughter, and son.

Does anyone have information about Agent Barr, the scene that night, or contacts who might remember the investigation around Eagle Pass in January 1996?
