Chief Deputy Sheriff Ken Norris Meister, 45, was fatally shot on April 20, 1991, during a drug sting in Lytle, Texas. Meister, who served with the Zavala County Sheriff’s Office, and another deputy were ambushed by three suspects. Meister was struck twice by rounds from a .22 caliber rifle fired by one of the suspects.

The other deputy returned fire, killing two suspects at the scene. A third suspect tried to flee but was captured and later charged with capital murder. Meister was survived by his wife, son, and daughter; colleagues and the community commemorated his service after the ambush.

What details about the operation or the suspects’ movements that night might help explain how the ambush was set up and how it could have been prevented?
