Constable Darrell Edward Lunsford Sr., 47, was shot and killed on January 23, 1991, during a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 59 near Garrison in Nacogdoches County, Texas. While conducting a routine stop he discovered marijuana in the trunk; three men then attacked him, beating and stabbing him before one of them used Lunsford’s service weapon to shoot him. Lunsford was with the Nacogdoches County Constable’s Office — Precinct 3.
The entire attack was recorded on Lunsford’s dash camera, evidence that led to the arrest, trial, and conviction of Baldemar Villarreal, Reynaldo Villarreal, and Jesus Cortez Zambrano for his murder. Lunsford is survived by his wife and two children. In May 2019 U.S. Highway 59 was renamed the Constable Darrell Lunsford Memorial Highway.
Does anyone have firsthand memories of Constable Lunsford, the scene that day, or information that could shed further light on the case?
