Derrick Lump Jackson was 12 when he was shot and killed in his Vernon, Texas apartment on September 23, 1990. He and his 14-year-old brother James Edwards were both killed in an early-morning attack by an unknown intruder; their mother, Linda Jackson, survived after being shot multiple times. Witness descriptions put the suspect as a black male about 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall with a heavy build who fled on foot.
The case remains unsolved and is listed among the Texas Rangers’ top 12 cold cases. The Texas Department of Public Safety and the Rangers’ Unsolved Crimes Investigation Team continue to seek leads; a reward of up to $3,000 is offered for information leading to an arrest. The family has continued to press for answers despite the passage of time.
Does anyone in the Vernon area remember unusual activity or people near the apartment around September 23, 1990, who might help bring these boys justice?
