Shane Paul Stewart was a 16-year-old from San Angelo, Texas, who was murdered on July 4, 1988. He and his girlfriend, 18-year-old Sally Ann McNelly, went to the Lake Nasworthy fireworks that evening and were last seen together by a fisherman before midnight. Their families reported them missing on July 7 when they did not return home.
Their bodies were found months later: Sally’s on November 11, 1988, and Shane’s on November 14, 1988. Both victims died from shotgun blasts to the head. The case drew national attention amid rumors linking the deaths to Satanic activity, and it was profiled on national media and the television show Unsolved Mysteries.
In 2017 the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office identified John Cyrus Gilbreath as a person of interest after items recovered from his home — writings, audio tapes, and biological material — were considered potentially connected to the murders. No arrests have been announced and the case remains unsolved; the Texas Rangers Cold Case Investigation Unit lists it as a priority and a cash reward is offered for information leading to an arrest.
Did anyone who attended the Lake Nasworthy fireworks on July 4, 1988, or who knew Shane or Sally, see anything that might help the investigation?
