Paul Douglas Hulsey Jr. was a 30-year-old Beaumont Police Department officer killed in the line of duty on March 22, 1988. He was investigating a vehicle with stolen plates in a hotel parking lot, ran the tags, and upon learning the car was stolen called for backup. When his backup was unavailable he approached the suspect alone; a struggle followed and the suspect retrieved a gun from the room and fatally shot Officer Hulsey.

The suspect was identified as Michael Lee Lockhart, later linked to killings of teenage girls in Florida and Indiana and charged with capital murder in Officer Hulsey’s death. The prosecution was moved to San Antonio because of publicity, Lockhart was convicted of capital murder and was executed on December 9, 1997. Officer Hulsey had served eight years with the department and left a wife and two daughters.

Did anyone in the Beaumont area have contact with Officer Hulsey the day before he was killed or recall seeing the vehicle he stopped?
