George William Raffield Jr. was a 21-year-old undercover officer with the Midlothian Police Department when he was killed on October 23, 1987. Posing as a student to investigate drug activity at Midlothian High School, Raffield was lured by students to a secluded area off FM 875, several miles south of Midlothian. As they were preparing to leave, one of the students shot him in the back of the head, killing him instantly; his body was found the next day during a large search.

Two students were arrested and arraigned on capital murder charges: the suspected gunman, reported as 16, and an accomplice, reported as 17. A 23-year-old woman faced a misdemeanor charge in connection with the slaying, and two other accomplices later received lesser sentences; the two students who directly committed the murder were sentenced to 45 years in prison. Raffield had served about a year with Midlothian and had earlier worked for the Wilmer and Red Oak police departments. He was survived by his parents and a sister.

Does anyone have memories of Raffield, the Midlothian High School undercover operation, or information about the case that could add context?
