On May 4, 1986, 20-year-old Gena Lee Turner of Hawkins, Texas, was murdered after a day trip to Lake Hawkins north of Tyler. Turner had gone to the lake with 19-year-old Bryan Boone and 18-year-old Suzanne Harrison. The three were abducted by Jerry Walter McFadden, who called himself The Animal. Harrison was raped, strangled and dumped in a park about 25 miles from Lake Hawkins.
Turner and Boone were found three days later, both shot execution-style with a .38-caliber pistol. Ammunition recovered from McFadden matched the bullets used in those killings. McFadden was identified by witnesses, arrested on May 6, 1986, escaped jail briefly while taking a female prison officer hostage and was recaptured. He received a life term for the escape in August 1986 and was sentenced to death in July 1987; the Texas Appeals Court affirmed the conviction and sentence in November 1993 and McFadden was executed on October 14, 1999.
Does anyone have memories of Lake Hawkins or the area around Tyler in 1986 that might shed light on this case?
