Jayaben Patel was a 9-year-old girl of Indian ethnicity who was killed on October 25, 1983, in Gilmer, Texas. She died along with her mother, Bhikhi Patel; sister, Shila Patel; and brother, 2-year-old Jayesh Patel. The family was found in their living quarters at the Upshur House Hotel, which was owned and operated by their father, Gandabhai Patel.

Gandabhai Patel was arrested and charged in connection with the deaths. He faced multiple murder charges; in December 1984 he was tried separately for the death of his son Jayesh, convicted and sentenced to 15 years for that killing. The other murder trials were moved to Gregg County because of heavy publicity in Upshur County. His defense argued he was not aware his actions were wrong due to insanity, but he was convicted of the murders.

The killings drew intense attention and raised questions about mental health and the legal process in a highly publicized domestic homicide. Does anyone have memories of the family or information about the case that could add context?
