A 2-year-old boy named Jayesh Patel was killed on October 25, 1983, in Gilmer, Texas. The death occurred during an incident that also claimed the lives of his mother, Bhikhi Patel, and siblings Shila and Jayaben Patel; their father, Gandabhai Patel, was accused of murdering the entire family. The family lived in the Upshur House Hotel in Gilmer, which Gandabhai Patel owned and operated.

Gandabhai Patel was tried and convicted for Jayesh’s murder; the jury rejected an insanity defense that argued he did not understand the wrongfulness of his actions. He received a 15-year prison sentence for the child’s killing. Because of heavy publicity in Upshur County, further proceedings on the other deaths were moved to Marion County and additional charges were pursued.

Did anyone in the Gilmer area at the time have information about the family’s life at the Upshur House Hotel or the events leading up to October 25, 1983?
