Charles Albert Renfro, a 44-year-old Deputy Sheriff with five years on the force, was killed on July 15, 1983, in Rankin, Texas. He was responding to a burglary at a local lumber and hardware store when, upon entering the building, he was struck by three shotgun blasts and died from his wounds. The suspects fled the scene immediately after the shooting.

The following day the suspects tried to steal a car from a nearby processing plant. One suspect was shot and killed by a plant manager during that attempted theft; a second suspect was arrested and charged with capital murder in connection with Deputy Renfro’s death. Renfro was survived by his wife and son and was buried at Colorado City Cemetery in Colorado City, Texas.
