Chief Jesus Rosalez Jr., 34, was the Chief of Police for the Elsa Police Department in Texas and a Vietnam War veteran who had served with the department for seven years. On October 30, 1982, he responded to a disturbance involving a man refusing to exit another man’s truck. When Rosalez asked the suspect to leave the vehicle, the suspect opened fire and fatally shot the chief. In return fire Chief Rosalez killed the suspect at the scene.

The suspect was carrying $10,000 in cash and was wanted in Mexico for the murder of a Mexican federal officer. Rosalez was survived by his wife and four children; his death was described as a significant loss to the community and the department. No further arrests, suspects, litigations, or investigations were reported because the incident ended with the suspect’s death.
