Deputy Marshal Todd M. Granger, 22, was killed on December 19, 1981, in Rose City, Texas. He had just begun duty with the Rose City Police Department that day. While seated in a city hall office with the city marshal, the marshal stood up and a weapon slipped from his holster. As the marshal reached to catch the falling gun it discharged, striking Deputy Marshal Granger in the chest and killing him.
Granger had served less than a year with the Beaumont Police Department before joining Rose City. He was survived by his wife and his parents. The inquiry determined the shooting was an accidental discharge; no arrests or charges were filed and the death was treated as a line-of-duty accidental death.
