Enrique L. Carrisalez was a 25-year-old patrolman with the Los Fresnos Police Department who was shot after a traffic stop on September 29, 1981. He stopped a speeding vehicle at the intersection of Texas 100 and FM 1847; as he exited his patrol car the vehicle’s driver also exited and opened fire. Carrisalez returned fire but did not hit the attacker. A civilian riding with Carrisalez called for help and provided a description of the vehicle.

Unaware that the same suspect had fatally shot Texas Highway Patrol Trooper David Rucker less than five minutes earlier, responding units found Rucker’s body several miles away holding the shooter’s identification. Carrisalez succumbed to his wounds several days later but identified the suspect in a photo lineup before he died. A search of the suspect’s home recovered the duty weapon of Constable Ricky Lewis, who had been murdered two years earlier; Lewis’s case remains officially unsolved. The suspect was sentenced to death for the murders of Trooper Rucker and Patrolman Carrisalez.

Did anyone in the area know the victim, the suspect, or see either vehicle that night?
